Sidney Arts & Cultural Exchange Group Community Cultural Center Receives $2,000 Grant

SIDNEY, NY (WBNG) – The Sidney Arts & Cultural Exchange Group Community Cultural Center is this week’s winner of a $2,000 grant from Upstate Shredding to Southern Tier Tuesdays.

Community cultural center is a non-profit organization located in Sidney, NY that provides arts and entertainment to the community. The organization’s president, Teri Schunk, said the center was once a Congregational church in downtown Sidney.

“It’s a beautiful building, it’s the anchor of our community on Main Street,” Schunk said. “Over the years the number of parishioners slowly dwindled and it pretty much went out of business, and because it is such an icon in our community, this building was donated to a group of community members to do this we wanted.”

Schunk said she formed a board of directors and decided to make the space a community cultural center.

“We really don’t have anything like that in our area,” Schunk said. “We weren’t sure what we wanted to do and we always throw our darts at the board to see what sticks.”

Schunk noted that the community cultural center currently focuses on arts, theater and organizing events in the community.

“We’re partnering with the Tri-Town Theater group, so in the church district we’ve built a new theatre, a new stage, we’ve worked on sound, lighting and we’ve donated seats and we we have plays and productions,” says Schunk.

The Community Cultural Center will host Life is a cabaret presented by Half Light Theater March 12 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20.

Schunk said the grant money will be used to fund events and activities for children.
