The Carbonell Awards promote the artistic growth of professional theater in South Florida by celebrating the diversity of our performing artists, providing scholarships, and enhancing public appreciation and civic pride by celebrating the accomplishments of our theater community. Over 20 professional theater companies in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties participate in the awards process each year. The Carbonell Awards also celebrate the achievements of local artistic leaders by presenting several special prizes.

Along with the Drama Desk in New York and the Joseph Jefferson Awards in Chicago, the Carbonell Awards are among the most prestigious regional artistic awards in the country and predate others, most notably the Helen Hayes Awards in Washington, DC. The Carbonell Awards are named after Manuel Carbonell, an internationally renowned sculptor, who designed the original award in bronze and solid marble in 1976, the signature trophy awarded annually to winners of the Carbonell Awards. Over the past 45 years, the Carbonell family have donated over $ 250,000 in awards.
